How the might the world have been different if
Al Gore had been elected in 2000?
- From the beginning, he would have read the daily report, and he would have selected a cabinet that would have read the daily report.
- It's highly likely the plane hijackers would have been caught before they struck, or if not, the response would have been much quicker. The second plane and probably the third would have been shot down.
- If they had succeeded, we would have gone after them in Afghanistan, and Pakistan, if necessary, while continuing to impose economic and military sanctions on the Iraqi government under the auspices of the UN. We would have supported groups trying to overthrow the Saddam regime, (in country) but no overt war would have been waged there.
As a result, over 4000 of our brave servicemen and women would be at home, safe with their families instead of dead on the battlefield, more than 20,000 would be whole and healthy instead of dealing with grievous IED injuries and post traumatic stress disorders, and another 100 Thousand, servicepeople, reserves and National Guard would never have gone to war.
- Osama Bin Laden would have been caught, tried and convicted. Guantanamo would never have existed.
There would be no debate on the rightness or wrongness of torture. There would have been no 'renditions'.
- When Katrina happened, with an organized evacuation plan, many lives would have been saved, and the response for those left behind would have been swift and comprehensive, enabling a much faster recovery for New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.
- Israel and Palestine would be well on the way to a lasting peace.
Arab oil producing countries would have begun to move toward a more democratic form of government, finally addressing women's rights issues and poverty. A dipomatic dialog would be underway among all Middle-Eastern countries and the West, in an effort to find common ground for economic, ecological and social agreements that could benefit all of mankind.
- We would have begun working on alternative energy and climate change solutions eight years ago.
- Our economy would be on the upswing, because we would be exporting our energy saving products around the world, and damaged ecosystems would be on the road to recovery. Our automombiles would all be flex-fuel vehicles running on gas, ethanol or bio-diesel, and most offering a combination of electric and internal combustion systems. Our average mileage would be 80 miles to the gallon, with 200 miles per gallon around the corner, having finally found an economical, lightweight and efficient battery storage technology, enabling us to reduce our fossil fuel use to under 10%. Petroleum could then be used to manufacture the important products we use that are made from it, and research would be underway to find other, more renewable resources to entirely replace petroleum in our culture and economy.
- 80% of the new homes built over this eight year period would have been fitted with solar panels and connected to the power grid, in a "net metering" system.
Power generation from the utility companies would be at its highest level ever, yet at the lowest cost.
Most homeowners on net metering would have a negative electric bill (in other words, they pay you). There would be no need to produce power using nuclear energy, (which would pollute the earth even worse than petroleum has). The power of the sun, wind and biofuels would be more than enough to power society's needs.
- Solar, in conjunction with BioMass, Wind and Water energy sources would have replaced 80% of our power generation capacity. Innovative technologies created by companies in the US would be the source of a new economic renaissance, and China would have become a major partner in alternative energy technologies and infrastructures, to grow its burgeoning economy in an earth-friendly and sustainable way..
- Our American infrastructure would be nearly completely rebuilt, with an emphasis on fixed rail transportation, and electric busses and subways in the cities.
- Education would finally be fully funded, from pre-school through college. Generous grants and student loan financing systems insure that even those with little money can attend an excellent University or Technical school. Our graduation rate from high school would have been 95% instead of under 50%.
- Universal Health Care for all would finally be a reality, with people no longer worrying that a major illness will bankrupt them.
- The future of our children would be looking brighter than ever, and we would be seriously pursuing space technologies, exploring the next frontier...
Instead,
We got George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney, and Scooter Libby, and Donald Rumsfeld, and Paul Wolfowitz, and Karl Rove, the Iraq war, the Recession, a national debt in the Trillions, 47 million without health care, billions in mortgage foreclosures, homeless veterans living under bridges, and soon to be joined by homeless familes...
If you really want more of what we've had for the last 8 years, then go ahead and vote for John McCain.
But if, like me, you think its possible to create the world I've described above, I urge you to VOTE OBAMA. With the help of the American People, Barack Obama will take our country to it's brightest future, and with it, the world. |
